History of tourism

The Nepali tourism industry that extended its wings in 1953 after Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary successfully summited the world’s tallest mountain, Mt Everest has been blooming since then. In the late 70s, Nepal was popular among the stoners as there was a free flow of high-quality marijuana and hashish throughout the country. However, in 1973, the sale of such substances became illegal. The end of that era brought new hope as the country welcomed tourists willing to explore new cultures and adventures.

To promote Nepal as a tourist destination in the global market, the Nepal Tourism Board was established in 1998. The same year, the first visit Nepal campaign was launched with the title “Visit Nepal 1998”. However, the tourism industry started to go downhill from 1999 and the massacre of the Royal family made the situation worse. These incidents sent a negative message to the world and Nepal barely received any tourists until 2006’s peace treaty between Maoist and Government. The year 2011 was celebrated as ‘Visit Nepal 2011’ to circulate the message to the world that Nepal is safe to visit. However, in 2015, Nepal faced another major setback in the form of an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. The devastating earthquake took the life of around 8000 people and damaged around 6 lakhs structures in and around Kathmandu. Several UNESCO Heritage Sites were badly affected and few trekking routes were damaged. The year saw a massive fall in the number of tourists. The earthquake hit Kathmandu and Gorkha, thus, other places Like Pokhara, Lumbini and Chitwan were completely safe to visit. So to circulate the message, the slogan ‘Nepal is Safe’ was formed.
