Upper Mustang Trekking is a journey to the former Hidden Kingdom of Lo. It was mysterious for a long time and opened as a restricted area trekking permit only after 1992. The trek leads you through the unique and magnificent landscape of the Mustang region, which requires a special trekking permit. Lomanthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, is the ultimate destination of the trek, which is surrounded by the stone wall.

Upper Mustang trek commences from Jomsom after a picturesque flight from Pokhara. It is a district center of Mustang. Walking through the Kali Gandaki River, the restricted zone begins after checking in from Kagbeni. It is an antique town in this region. The diverse pictures of the remote and striking landscape are equally assisted by the cultural affluence as monasteries, chhortens, mani walls and the white painted houses throughout the trail. The Himalayan views on the horizon, seasonal vegetations and crops, some high passes, sandy cliffs and much more attractions have made the trek to Upper Mustang a different trip than others in Nepal. Reaching Lomanthang, you have an excellent opportunity to explore the unique way of living standards, Tibetan Buddhist cultural influence, monasteries, chhortens and caves. Itinerary

Representative of Reliance Trekking will be receiving you at Tribhuvan International airport, Kathmandu and you will be transferred to hotel in our private tourist vehicle. Overnight at Hotel.(Breakfast included)

In the morning, we set up a pre-trip meeting with an introduction of the trekking guide. Managing the document to prepare the paperwork for the trekking, then we visit the UNESCO listed world heritage sites of the Kathmandu valley, including Boudhnath Stupa, one of the biggest Buddhist shrines in the world, the Pashupatinath temple that is situated beside the Bagmati River. Driving back to the hotel, you prepare the trek with packing your belongings. Overnight at hotel. (Breakfast included)

In the morning, drive to Pokhara from Kathmandu through the winding road. The Prithvi highway goes along the Trishuli River side. Exploring the side valleys and terraced hillside, you reach to Pokhara and transfer to the hotel. O/N at Hotel. (Breakfast included)

We take an early flight from Pokhara to Jomsom that offers the outstanding views of the snow covered peaks of Annapurna and Daulagiri range. The 8000 meter peaks look dramatic. Landing at Jomsom, the district center of Mustang, meet further crew (if we have), we begin the trek to Kagbeni through the Kali Gandaki River bank. Kagbeni is a gateway of Upper Mustang. The first day through the restricted region of Upper Mustang, we walk towards the east bank of the Kaligandaki, ascending over many ridges and the trail escorts us north and reaches Tangbe village. It is an amazing town with white washed houses and prayer flags on the roof top. From Tangbe, we head towards Chhusang village, cross the River and climb towards the ridge through the tunnel. Following the narrow trail, we reach to Chele, which is culturally a loaded town, influenced by the Tibetan Buddhism. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

After the breakfast at Chele, we commence the journey with a steep climb as we follow the trail westwards and see Ghyakar on the opposite side of a deep canyon. Then, the trail leads us through the gorge. Descending, we can enjoy the picturesque view of the Samar village and the stunning Himalayas a bit far away. From Samar village, we head continually, exploring the red painted monastery and passing Rangchyung Chhorten. With some up and down and with a final ascent, we reach to Syangbuchen and rest. Heading from Shyangbochen, we begin to climb to the Yanda La Pass, discovering the red painted Chhorten and various Tibetan Buddhist attractions. Passing Ghelung, where we explore a couple of red monasteries, we follow the grassy trail. Then we ascend towards the Nyi La Pass, continually following the Ghami La Pass, we trek down to the downstream. The sandy dust and arid landscape is a different scenery. Walking further, we reach to the widespread valley with the beautiful Ghami village. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

After the breakfast at Ghami, we embark passing the longest Mani wall of the Upper Mustang. It is decorated with the wonderful carvings. Things are painted red that offer the typical scenery around the area. It is beyond the greenery, which is devoured by the desert landscape. Then we head gradually through the Tsarang Chhorten and begin to see the human settlements again on the route. We reach to Tsarang and rest. Overnight at lodge. Relatively an easy and exciting trek we have on today’s trip. After the breakfast at Tsarang, we begin to walk through the flat trail, passing a chhorten and ancient caves. The mixture of the desert landscape and seasonal wild flowers is wonderful. From the ridge we see a stone walled town of Lomanthang. After a short descend and a couple of hours walk, we reach to this fabulous town of Upper Mustang. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

A huge day to explore the mystical land and the capital of Upper Mustang. After the breakfast, we stroll around to unveil the mysteries of the cultural prosperity in Lomanthang and its surroundings. Namgyal Monastery, visit to the Tingkhar village, Jhong cave (5 stories) and others are dramatic. The cultural affluence of the local people is equally outstanding. The Tiji festival is celebrated in Lomanthang, which is a world renowned festival. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

After the breakfast, we begin to trek from Lomanthang, taking a different route. Through the up and down trail and the flat land, we reach to Yara for the rest today. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

Having breakfast, we embark the journey through the Riverbank. Via Damodar Kunda, we cross the River and ascend to the high pass of 3850 meters, which offers the enticing view of the Tange village that is beautifully located at 3500 meters. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

Beginning the trek from Tange after the breakfast, we climb through the steep trail and the wonderful views greet us. The Chachula Pass is a magnificent viewpoint of the snow covered peaks and the mind blowing valleys. Heading through the gentle up and down trail from here leads us gradually to Tetang, which is the Upper Chuksang village. Overnight at lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

After the breakfast at Tetang, we climb up steeply and through the narrow gorge. Reaching to the hill ridge, the magnificent views of the Thorung peak and the pass becomes visible. Heading through the gentle trail, we pass through the beautiful valley and we get closer to the famous Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage destination, known as Muktinath. The 108 water sprouts, sacred pond and the surroundings are taken extremely sacred. Having bath on the water sprouts is believed to wash away your sins. Overnight at lodge. After paying the homage at the Muktinath temple, the trek leads you via Ranipauwa village after the breakfast. Several attractions during the trek as Jharkot monastery, Tibetan herbal medical center and the old fortress of Jharkot which once served as palace. The trail goes through the steep and barren hillside that takes you to the Jomsom via the dusty Kali Gandaki valley. Overnight at Hotel. (Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner Included)

About half an hour flight from Jomsom to Pokhara offers magnificent views of the Annaourna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges. Arriving at Pokhara, transfer to the hotel. After the refreshment and rest, we take a half day sightseeing tour in Pokhara, exploring Fewa Lake, Devi’s water fall, Museum, Tibetan refugee settlement and Gupteshower cave. Overnight at hotel. It is all the way about 7 hours beautiful road drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu through the Prithvi highway and transfer to the hotel. Overnight at hotel. Breakfast Included)

Trekking equipment

The Following information will give you some idea about what you need to bring for the trek as the backpack for the hiking in Nepal and the gear play a vital role for the successful trip and we suggest you to have all the necessary gear for the trip and not to have unnecessary equipment/things that you will not be using for the trip and list of the gear you need for the trek are:

  1. Good down Sleeping bag (Optional/You need to bring your own but if you do not have on your own and it is to be chargeable during the trek.
  2. Duffel or Rucksack bag to keep your all the gear and this will be carried by the porters.
  3. Daypack bag for yourself
  4. A down Jacket
  5. Shade hat
  6. Warm wool hat to cover your ears
  7. A pair of lightweight warm gloves.

  3. Imodium or Peptone besom, Flexon capsules for upset stomach or diarrhea.
  4. Diamox 125 or 250mg or 400mg tablets for altitude sickness.
  5. 1 small personal sized first-aid kit with blister treatments such as moleskin, band-aids, some waterproof tape, anti-infection ointments, etc. Reliance Trekking company’s team also provide first aid kits)

  1. Passport and extra passport photos (4 copies)
  2. Durable wallet/pouch for travel documents, money & passport.
  3. Lip care (Balm) At least SPF 20, 2 sticks.
